What are enzybiotics?
Enzybiotics were first characterized by Nelson, Loomis and Fischetti as a kind of experimental antibacterial therapy. The name is a portmanteau of the terms "enzyme" and "antibiotics", which were combined to form the term. Enzymes have been widely used for their antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Enzybiotic research is based on proteolytic enzymes known as endolysins, which have proven to be particularly effective against a variety of bacteria and serve as the basis for this research. Endolysins are a very effective way to break down bacterial cells. They are derived from bacteriophages and have a long history of use. The problem of antibiotic resistance, which has allowed the worldwide spread of drug-resistant microorganisms that pose a huge threat to animal and human health, is the main reason for the research on enzybiotics.
